Become a Certified Peer Support Specialist

Peer Support Specialists are people living in recovery with mental illness and / or substance use disorder and who provide support to others who can benefit from their lived experiences.

North Carolina certification can be earned through Track A (Foundations Part I & II) or Track B (Approved Course).

Certification Pathways: Track A vs Track B

North Carolina’s Peer Support Specialist certification has two pathways. Both lead to the same certification, but the required training sequence differs.

Track A: Foundations Course Path

  • Complete Foundations of Peer Support (Part I) (online)
  • Complete Foundations of Peer Support (Part II) (instructor-led)
  • Complete remaining certification requirements (documentation, ethics, etc.)
  • Apply for certification online

Track A Details »

Track B: Approved Course Path

  • Complete a 50-hour Approved Course (min. 40 hours live + 10 hours pre-work/homework)
  • Approved Courses are reviewed by NCCPSS and currently expire by December 2029
  • Complete remaining certification requirements (20 additional hours, proof of education, ethics, etc.)
  • Apply for certification online
